Tennis balls

Tennis balls are spherical and light on their feet. Tennis is a super fun sport that you play with these special balls. There are different colors of tennis balls available, but the most common color of tennis balls is yellow and orange. Ever wondered how these cool balls are created? Let’s take a closer look at the composition of tennis balls, how they are engineered, and the future of tennis equipment.

Once upon a time, people played tennis with wooden or leather balls. These older Dmantis balls were very heavy, and thus bounced very poorly at all. Let us take you back to the 1500s when dare we say something even cooler happened: the first tennis balls were made of rubber. These new tennis racket and ball were made of natural rubber and compressed into a hard, round shape. It was a significant betterment over the older wooden and leather balls.

How Bounce and Spin are Determined?

Over time, tennis balls continued to evolve. They were rubber-coated and had a core that was basically string inside. This design enabled the balls to bounce better and made the game more fun. Today, tennis balls consist of a rubber core filled with air. This air is pressurized, enabling the balls to bounce higher and last longer than ever. The felt cover on the exterior of the balls has also changed over time. There are products to make them from synthetic materials that are even more durable than the previous wool version.

The surface you play on also has an impact on ball spin. Hitting a topspin shot on clay will cause the ball to drop. This can make for a tricky return shot for your opponent. Let’s say you play a shot on a hard court, and you put a lot of spin on it — that’s fine, that ball is going to bounce straight up for your opponent to read it very easily. The type of felt from which the balls are made may also affect their behavior. Line teams work on Dmantis balls for different types of surfaces, in part because grass court balls have less felt than the clay court variety, changing the way it bounces and spins.
